Banská Bystrica
Through southern Slovakia along the R1 expressway to the heart of central Slovakia. Banská Bystrica is historically a mining town and the centre of the Slovak National Uprising. A short, comfortable carpool at a reasonable price.
The R1 expressway via Nitra and Žiar nad Hronom
The main connection is the R1 expressway: from Bratislava around Trnava, through Nitra and Žiar nad Hronom to Banská Bystrica. The distance is about 210 km and in normal traffic the trip takes 2 hours 30 minutes. Some sections of the R1 are not yet fully four-lane, particularly between Žiar and Banská Bystrica, where 2+1 and 2+2 lane configurations alternate.
The other option is via D1 to Trenčín and then through Prievidza to central Slovakia. Comparable distance, slightly slower in time, but most of the trip on full motorway. On Friday afternoons queues tend to form near Nitra and Žiar. Drivers who know this start either earlier or later.
Banská Bystrica: mining town with a leaning tower
Central Slovakia has its capital in Banská Bystrica, historically one of the most important mining towns in the Kingdom of Hungary, which prospered from copper extraction as early as the 15th and 16th centuries. The main public space is SNP Square, today a pedestrian zone named after the Slovak National Uprising that broke out here in autumn 1944.
The most striking building on the square is the Clock Tower, which over the centuries has tilted off vertical by nearly seventy centimetres, and is therefore popularly called the leaning tower. Right next to it stands the Barbican, a town fortification from 1512 with three bells including the six-tonne "General", which during Turkish raids warned the town of approaching danger. The Gothic Matthias House from the 15th century and a Baroque town hall also survive in the centre.
From contemporary Banská Bystrica you cannot skip the SNP Memorial, a museum and open-air complex dedicated to the events of autumn 1944. From the city it's quick to reach Donovaly (winter resort), the birthplace of writer Jozef Gregor Tajovský in Tajov, or the wooden articular church in Hronsek, which is on the UNESCO list.
