R1: short, straight, full of commuters

The route between Banská Bystrica and Zvolen is just about 20 km on the R1. In normal traffic, it's 20 minutes of driving; in rush hour (morning northbound, afternoon southbound), it can extend by 10 minutes. The sections between the cities are entirely on expressway, so don't expect village transit or complicated navigation.

For both cities this is a typical commuter route: Banská Bystrica is a regional capital and centre of state administration, Zvolen has the Technical University (TU Zvolen, focused on forestry and woodworking) and the main railway junction between northern and southern Slovakia. Carpool prices are symbolic, €2–4 per seat.

Zvolen: royal château and one of the largest castle complexes in Central Europe

Zvolen's centre is dominated by Zvolen Castle, a medieval château built by King Louis I the Great between 1360 and 1382 as a hunting residence. It stands directly in the city centre and is now operated by the Slovak National Gallery. It's the richest art gallery in Slovakia and a national cultural monument.

Above the confluence of the Hron and Slatina rivers, just 2 km southwest of the centre, lies Pustý hrad, one of the largest castle complexes in Central Europe. The ruins date from the 12th century, and the castle was built on the site of an older Slavic hillfort. An educational trail leads from the city up to the castle, an easy outing for families.

Around Zvolen, sights worth seeing include the Wooden Articular Church in Hronsek (UNESCO), Šášov Castle (15 km southeast), and Čertova skala. The town is small, but the combination of Zvolen Castle and Pustý hrad makes for a fairly full tourist day for visitors.
