Nitra
A short carpool from the capital to the oldest town in Slovakia. Nitra has a castle from the 9th century, dating back to Great Moravia. Via the R1 you'll get there in about an hour.
Via R1 through Senec and Sereď
From the capital you reach Nitra via the R1 expressway, which bypasses Senec and runs through Sereď. Distance is about 90 km and in normal traffic the trip takes about an hour. The slowest section is the Bratislava exit in the morning (outbound) and the Bratislava entry in the afternoon. Typical Bratislava commuter rush adds 15 to 20 minutes to the base time.
For students of Constantine the Philosopher University, the Slovak Agricultural University, and workers at the Jaguar Land Rover plant (and other businesses around the Nitra Industrial Park), carpooling is a well-established option. Short route, low price, €5–7 per seat.
Nitra: the oldest historic centre in Slovakia
Nitra is among cities with documented existence going back to Great Moravia. The castle complex that dominates the town probably originated in the 9th century and has literally grown into its current form through more than a millennium of building campaigns. Part of the complex is the Cathedral of St. Emeram, architecturally a fusion of preserved sections of an 11th-century Romanesque church, the Gothic Upper Church from the 14th century, and the 17th-century Lower Church.
The Diocesan Museum has been operating in the castle complex since 2007, displaying rare written documents from the Diocese of Nitra, including the Zobor Charters from 1111 and 1113, among the oldest preserved Latin documentary records from Slovak territory.
Next to the city stands Mount Zobor, with the ruins of a Benedictine and Camaldolese monastery and, on its lower peak, a Pyramid with the torso of a Millennium Memorial. For Nitra residents, this is the most accessible nature outing, reachable from the city via an educational trail.
