Bratislava →
Žilina
The D1 from Bratislava to the northern metropolis of Slovakia, beneath the Malá Fatra mountains and the gateway to Vrátna Valley. Carpooling saves both time and money compared to the train.
Along the D1 from the capital to Žilina
The route follows the Považie line: Trnava, Piešťany, Trenčín, Považská Bystrica and Žilina. Distance is about 205 km and in normal traffic the trip takes 2 hours 15 minutes. The slow point is typically near Trenčín. The D1 there is still only two-lane in each direction, and queues of up to 5 km are common in morning rush hour southbound and afternoon rush hour northbound.
On Friday afternoons the trip extends by 30 minutes, sometimes a full hour. For students of UNIZA, commuters at the Kia automotive park, and people running errands in the capital, carpooling is roughly as fast as the ZSSK Intercity train. It picks you up wherever you arrange, not just at the main station. Price €10–14 per seat.
Žilina: beneath Malá Fatra, where the Váh meets the Kysuca
Slovakia's fourth-largest city has one unusual architectural feature: Mariánske Square is surrounded by arcades, locally called "laubne". After a fire in 1521, the city rebuilt the square in a unified style featuring this characteristic motif, which then spread to adjacent streets. Žilina's old town has been a municipal heritage reserve since 1987.
At the confluence of the Váh and Kysuca rivers stands Budatín Castle, originally a medieval fortress from the second half of the 13th century, now a museum. Around the city you have several classic options: Strečno Castle (15 km east), Malá Fatra National Park with Vrátna Valley and Jánošíkove diery (gorges). In winter, the Vrátna and Martinské hole ski resorts operate. For a Bratislavan, this is the closest Slovak skiing destination with full infrastructure.
