Bratislava → Trenčín along the D1 and Považie

The whole trip runs along the D1: past Trnava, Piešťany and into Trenčín. In normal traffic the trip takes about 1 h 30 min, but the D1 between Trnava and Trenčín is in places still only 2+2 lanes and queues form on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings. In morning rush hour southbound to Bratislava (especially from Trenčín and Piešťany), expect another 20 minutes.

Carpooling on this route is popular with commuters working at companies in Trenčín (Konštrukta, ZF Slovakia) and Piešťany, as well as with students of the Alexander Dubček University of Trenčín. Price per seat is typically €8–12.

Trenčín: the pearl of Považie with a Roman past

Trenčín Castle rises above the town on a limestone cliff. It's the third-largest castle complex in Slovakia, after Spiš and Bratislava. The oldest structure within the complex is a Great Moravian rotunda from as early as the 9th century. The castle is open to the public today, and from the castle tower you have a view over the whole Považie region.

Trenčín's biggest rarity, however, is right on the castle rock: the Laugaricio Roman Inscription. It was carved by Roman legionaries in 179 AD after their victory over Germanic tribes during the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius. It is the northernmost preserved Roman epigraphic monument in Central Europe north of the Danube, preserved in situ. You can view it from the lobby of the Hotel Elizabeth at the start of Mierové Square.

Another striking feature is Trenčín Synagogue from 1913, painted in deep turquoise on Štúr Square, one of the most distinctive pieces of modern sacred architecture in Slovakia. The town centre also includes Mierové Square with a plague column and the covered parish stairs leading up to the castle.
