What the trip from Prešov involves

From Prešov you go on the D1 first around Košice, then along the entire Tatra side of Slovakia: Levoča, Poprad, Liptov, Žilina, Trenčín, Trnava, Bratislava. Realistically about 410 km and in good conditions 4 hours 40 minutes. The trip from Žilina southward is now almost entirely on full motorway; the northern section (Prešov → Liptovský Mikuláš) has several single-lane sections where traffic occasionally slows.

Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings bring queues near Trenčín and Piešťany. Weekday mornings traffic is usually clear. For the long distance, planning a break near Liptovský Mikuláš or Trenčín is recommended. Drivers usually do this automatically.

Bratislava: a contrast to Šariš

From Prešov's quiet historic Main Street you arrive after five hours into the busiest part of the country. The capital has 460 thousand inhabitants, an open border with Austria (Bratislava → Vienna 80 km) and the status of the academic and administrative centre of Slovakia.

Bratislava's centre is compact: Bratislava Castle above the Danube (85 m above the river), Cathedral of St. Martin as the former coronation church of 19 Hungarian kings, and Hviezdoslavovo Square with the Slovak National Theatre. From the castle you see the Slovak-Austrian-Hungarian tri-border and the famous SNP Bridge with its UFO restaurant disc.

The Prešov → Bratislava route is specific in that drivers often take parcels for family, small shipments, or cargo orders. Wandride offers cargo mode S/M/L/XL. A parcel across the country arrives faster than a next-day courier.
