From east to west: the D1 from Prešov to Pečňa

From Košice you head along the D1 first towards Prešov, then through Levoča, Poprad and the entire stretch under the Tatra foothills. You continue through the Liptov region (Liptovský Mikuláš, Ružomberok), then through Vrútky, Žilina and the whole Považie region into Trenčín, Piešťany, Trnava and finally Bratislava. Realistically 400 km, with the bulk of the time on open motorway.

The westbound direction tends to slow on Friday afternoons. Drivers from the east head home for the weekend, and queues are typical near Trenčín and Piešťany. On Sunday evening the same applies in reverse. Mid-week the traffic flows fairly well.

Bratislava: the crown at the end of the road

After four hours of driving, Bratislava opens up its famous panoramic view of the castle above the Danube. It's one of the youngest capitals in Europe (since 1993), but with several centuries of history. In the local Cathedral of St. Martin, 19 monarchs of the Kingdom of Hungary were crowned from the 16th century onward. The last coronation (Ferdinand V) took place in 1830, and Maria Theresa herself was crowned here in 1741.

From the castle tower you have a view over the tri-border of Slovakia, Austria and Hungary. The centre of the Old Town features Hviezdoslavovo Square with the Slovak National Theatre; you'll also find Michael's Gate, the Blue Church in Art Nouveau style, and the SNP Bridge with its remarkable UFO-shaped restaurant disc.

Those who travel Košice → Bratislava regularly are above all students of Comenius University, the Slovak University of Technology and the University of Economics; workers in foreign companies (IBM, AT&T, IT centres); and those with family or doctors in Bratislava. The cross-country trip makes a car a more comfortable alternative to the 5.5-hour train.
