D2 via Brodské and Břeclav

The route runs entirely on motorway: from Bratislava on D2 northbound, then through the Brodské/Lanžhot border crossing, and via Břeclav along D2/D1 into Brno. Realistically 122 km and an hour and a half in normal traffic. On Friday afternoons from Bratislava and Sunday evenings from Brno, the trip stretches by 20–30 minutes due to queues near Břeclav and on D1 before Brno.

Carpooling on this route is intense: thousands of Slovaks working in Brno (IT firms, research centres, automotive industry) and Czechs working in Bratislava commute daily. Price per seat is €8–12.

Brno: Moravian metropolis with a thousand-year history

Brno is the second-largest city in Czechia and the historic capital of Moravia. Špilberk Castle rises above the city on a rocky hilltop, originally a Gothic royal castle from the 13th century, later a Habsburg fortress, and in the 18th–19th centuries the most feared prison in the monarchy. Today it's a museum with casemates and a panoramic view of the city.

The other landmark is the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul on Petrov Hill, two 84-metre towers visible across the centre. A local oddity: the cathedral bells ring noon at 11 o'clock instead of 12. The tradition dates back to 1645, when Brno was the only Moravian city to successfully resist the Swedish siege. General Torstenson promised to take the city before the noon bell, the Brno commander had the bells rung an hour early, and the Swedes withdrew.

For visitors there's also: Freedom Square with a plague column, Vegetable Market with the Baroque Parnas Fountain, the Goose on a String theatre, and the underground beneath Vegetable Market. Brno is a student city (Masaryk University, Mendel University, Brno University of Technology) and a centre of the Czech IT industry: Red Hat, IBM, AVG, Honeywell.
