Prague →
Bratislava
The way home for the Slovak diaspora in Prague and the reverse direction of Sunday carpooling. From the former shared capital back to Bratislava. By car it's often faster and cheaper than the train.
Along D1 through Brno and D2 to Bratislava
From Prague the route runs along the D1 motorway southeast through Velké Meziříčí and Velká Bíteš to Brno (~210 km), then on the D2 via Břeclav and the Lanžhot/Brodské border crossing into Bratislava (~80 km). Realistically 290 km and in good conditions 3 hours 30 minutes. On Friday afternoons from Prague and Sunday evenings in reverse, traffic is traditionally heavier. Queues near Brno and around Velká Bíteš can extend the trip by 30–60 minutes.
For the Slovak diaspora in Prague (around 50–60 thousand people), the Sunday carpool Prague → Bratislava is a typical return to work. The average price per seat is €13–14.
Bratislava: return to the capital
After three and a half hours of driving, a Praguer is welcomed by Bratislava, the youngest capital in Europe (since 1993), but with history reaching deep before independent Slovakia. For a Slovak working in Prague, this is the Sunday return home to family, often also a Friday-morning trip back to Prague.
The city has 460 thousand inhabitants, an open border with Austria (Vienna 80 km), Bratislava Castle above the Danube, and St. Martin's Cathedral as the historic coronation church of Hungarian kings. The centre is compact: Hviezdoslavovo Square, Michael's Gate, the Blue Church in Art Nouveau style, the SNP Bridge with its UFO-shaped restaurant disc.
For a Praguer travelling to Bratislava for the first time: the city is smaller and more compact than Prague, but culturally and economically growing. The distance between BA and Vienna (80 km) makes it one of the few European capitals with another metropolis within an hour's drive.
