D2 via Břeclav and Lanžhot to Bratislava

From Brno the route runs along the D2 motorway south through Břeclav and the Lanžhot/Brodské border crossing all the way to Bratislava. The distance is 122 km and the trip takes about an hour and a half in normal traffic. The border crossing continues as one motorway.

On Friday afternoons from Brno and Sunday evenings from Bratislava, traffic is typically heavier. Queues around Břeclav and at the Bratislava entry can extend the trip by 20–30 minutes. Carpooling on this route is plentiful: the Slovak community in Brno (Masaryk University students, IT workers, doctors) regularly travels home, while businesspeople commute the other way for meetings.

Bratislava: Slovak metropolis at the Austrian border

Bratislava has been the capital of Slovakia since 1993, but its history reaches deep before the establishment of the independent republic. The city sits at the tri-border of Slovakia, Austria and Hungary. Only 80 km separates it from central Vienna, a rarity among European capitals.

Bratislava Castle rises 85 metres above the Danube and serves as the seat of the National Council of the Slovak Republic and a museum of Slovak history. St. Martin's Cathedral in the Old Town served as the coronation church of the Hungarian Kingdom from 1563 to 1830, 19 monarchs were crowned here, including Maria Theresa. In the centre you'll find Michael's Gate, the Blue Church in Art Nouveau style, Hviezdoslavovo Square with the Slovak National Theatre and the SNP Bridge with its famous UFO-shaped restaurant disc.

For someone from Brno travelling to Bratislava for the first time: the city is smaller and more compact than Brno, with more of a Central European than typically Slavic atmosphere. You can walk the centre in an hour, find a market on Hlavné námestie, cafés below the castle, and nightlife in the Old Town.
